Outgoing Exchange

For Current University of Melbourne Students Wishing to Study Overseas

The University of Melbourne exchange program offers students a unique opportunity to study and live overseas whilst completing a degree. As an Exchange student, you can study for a single semester or full year at any one of approximately 135 exchange partners in over 32 countries around the world.

Eligibility for Outgoing Exchange

To be eligible, students must:

  • be enrolled at the University of Melbourne as a local or international student
  • have completed, or about to complete, at least one year of study and 75 points at the University of Melbourne by the due date of applications
  • have achieved a weighted average of at least 70% (H2B) across the degree for which you are seeking credit while on exchange
  • be able to study the equivalent of at least a full-time load while overseas
  • obtain faculty approval on a Melbourne Abroad application
  • demonstrate through a financial plan your ability to support your stay overseas;
  • satisfy host institution and host country entry requirements
  • be a 'good ambassador' for the University of Melbourne
Eligilbity for Language Students

Students who are seeking to gain credit for language subjects must:

  • have studied that language at the University of Melbourne for at least 12 months prior to applying for an exchange
  • be at an Intermediate level of the language at the time of departure
  • have a minimum H2B (70%) average in the language.

Students enrolled in combined degrees, concurrent diplomas, Honours or postgraduate coursework degrees are all eligible to apply for an Exchange program. Students enrolled in 100-point programs have special restrictions placed on their Exchange. Please contact the Faculty of Arts Outgoing Exchange Officer for more information.

Enrolment and Fees

When overseas, students remain enrolled full-time at the University of Melbourne and continue to pay their course fees (HECS or full fees) here. Students are also enrolled full-time at the overseas institution but are not required to pay course fees to them.

Scholarships

Generous travel scholarships are available for Exchange students. Visit the Melbourne Global Mobility Funding and Scholarships for Outgoing students web page for more information.

Honours Students

Students undertaking an honours year are normally only allowed to go on exchange for one semester and 37.5 points of coursework study. It is a Faculty requirement that all work completed overseas as part of your Honours program must be submitted to the relevant department at the University of Melbourne upon your return.

Postgraduate Students
Coursework Students

Graduate, postgraduate diploma and masters-by-coursework students are usually eligible to participate in the Melbourne Abroad Program, but should confirm their eligibility with the convenor of their course. If there are no course restrictions, the same eligibility requirements as undergraduate students apply, with the following exception:

  • postgraduate coursework students must have completed at least one semester and 50 points, in the University of Melbourne course for which they are seeking credit for the study undertaken overseas, by the due date of applications.

Research Students

Masters-by-research and PhD students are usually eligible to participate in Melbourne Abroad exchange agreements. As a research student you should make individual arrangements with your supervisors and the Melbourne Abroad Unit. To be accepted by the Melbourne Abroad Unit, research students will have to provide, in place of one of the academic references required by the Melbourne Abroad application, a statement of support for their principal supervisor which addresses:

  • the student's academic merit
  • the value of the exchange to the research project
  • details of any subjects to be undertaken overseas, if they are for credit and their relevance to the research
  • details of any temporary supervision that has been arranged
  • if the student can still complete their thesis within the original time frame.

Research students should also apply for 'Leave to Study Away' through the Melbourne School of Graduate Research website under the Current Students: Forms section.
