Academic and Language Skills for Arts Students

For Undergraduate Students
Academic Interactive Resources portal (AIRport)

This online course has self-paced interactive activities to help you understand academic writing and enhance your own written work. Each student is assigned a moderator who gives feedback via email, to help you improve your writing skills.

Two streams of the course are offered, one for English as Second Langauge (ESL) students and one for students whose first language is English.

You have four weeks to complete the exercises. A certificate is available on completion of this course.

Date: You can start any time (you then have four weeks to complete the exercises)
Time: Any time of the day or night
Venue: Gate 2 of the Academic Interactive Resources portal (AIRport)

 
Arts Writing Tutors

The Peer Writing Tutors service offers individual drop-in consultations in the Baillieu Library for Arts undergraduate students.

Lunchtime Academic Skills Seminars

The Academic Skills Unit, in conjunction with the Arts & Music Student Centre, is offering a series of lunchtime Academic Skills seminars designed to support you in your studies. These seminars will run from Week 2 of the semester.

You can enrol for these seminars through the Academic Skills Unit Community on the LMS. Access the LMS through the Student Portal, or at www.lms.unimelb.edu.au/login/. Click on the Communities tab (if you haven't accessed the Academic Skills Unit before, you will need to click on the Enrol button first). Navigate to "Workshop and Short Course Enrolment" and then "Workshops for Arts Students," where you will find the full list of courses.

For Non Native Speakers of English - 'English as Second Langauge' (ESL) 'English for Academic Purposes' (EAP) Classes
For Honours or Masters by Coursework Students
  • CourseWorks is the online home for postgraduate coursework students.
For Research Students
  • Thesis Writers' Circle: A joint initiative from the Academic Skills Unit and Faculty of Arts.
    This series of workshops and seminars aims to address some of the problems and challenges experienced by mid-candidature students as they write a thesis - students should have commenced 6 months prior to the workshop and not be in the last 6 months of the candidature. Facilitated by experienced lecturers and presenters, the program will include:
    • Evaluating and using sources in writing
    • Structuring a Literature Review
    • Demonstrating critical analysis in writing
    • Avoiding plagiarism
    • Structuring the thesis in terms of introduction, separate chapters and conclusion
    • Academic writing style and clarity
    • Editing and proof reading

    A number of Thesis Writers' Circle run throughout the year. Check the Academic Skills Unit workshop calendar to see when the next one starts.

  • Postgraduate Essentials Postgraduate Essentials is a suite of courses jointly offered with School of Graduate Research for commencing and completing PhD candidates. Strategies for a Successful Start to your PhD takes candidates through everything they need in the first year, while Completion and Beyond assists them in preparing the thesis for examination in the planning for life beyond the PhD.
