I've Missed a Lecture and a Tutorial - Do I Apply for Special Consideration?

Except in unusual circumstances problems involving no more than 3 consectutive days or a total 5 days are not grounds for special consideration. You should not therefore submit an application for special consideration for missing an individual lecture or tutorial: you can provide reasons for your absence directly to your tutor.

I Don't Think I Can Hand My Essay In On Time - Do I Apply for Special Consideration?

Normally you would not apply for special consideration - you would apply directly to your lecturer or tutor for an extension (make sure you speak to them before the due date for the essay). In general extensions are permitted for unforeseen factors affecting your ability to complete a task on time. The lecturer or tutor may advise you to apply for special consideration in addition to applying for an extension depending on the circumstances.

When Do I Need To Submit My Application By?

Your application will be considered as long as it is submitted online within 3 days of the due date for the final piece of assessment in that subject. If you are applying for special consideration for more than one subject your application must be submitted within 3 days of the due date for the final piece of assessment in the subject that has the earliest due date.

If you are applying for special consideration for a particular piece of assessment you should submit your online application within 3 days of the due date for that piece of assessment.

How Do I Apply for Special Consideration?

You will need to complete an on-line application form. A receipt number will be issued when you submit your application. Keep a record of the receipt number. In addition, you will need to supply the Arts and Music Student with a Special Consideration – Preferred Outcome Request form for each relevant subject. This should be attached to the Health Care or Appropriate Professional (HCAP) form upon submission. The Special Consideration – Preferred Outcome Request form is available from the Arts and Music Student Centre or for download.

Do I Need to Submit Documentation With My Application?

Yes. You will need to print a Health Care or Appropriate Professional form from the Student Information System and have it completed by a health care or appropriate professional (for example, your doctor, your counsellor, a staff member of the Disability Liaison Unit or your minister).

In some instances it may be inappropriate for you to consult a health care or other appropriate professional. In such situtations you yourself can complete the Health Care or Appropriate Professional Form bu you must attach documentated proof of the situation. For example if you were the victim of a crime and can provide a police report or if you missed an exam due to a train cancellation and can provide a letter from the appropriate public transport authority.

The Health Care or Appropriate Professional form must be submitted to the Faculty within 5 days of submitting your initial on-line application. If it is not received within 5 days your application my be rejected.

What Happens After I Submit An On-line Application?

The fact that you have applied will be noted on your student record. When your Health Care or Appropriate Professional form is received by Faculty, your application and Health Care or Appropriate Professional form are sent to the relevant teaching departments. The lecturer in your subject or a Board of Examiners will then decide if there are grounds for special consideration in your case and what action will be taken. The possible outcomes are:

  • to offer you additional assessment such as an essay or special exam.
  • to alter your mark from a borderline fail to a pass
  • to take no action
  • to give you an extension of time to submit your work.
I Am In A Combined Degree, Do I Have to Submit An Application to Each Of My Faculties?
