Leave of Absence
Students who are currently enrolled in a course but wish to take time off should apply for leave of absence. All coursework students are eligible for two semesters leave from their degree. Research Masters students are eligible for 12 months leave during the course of their candidature.
Most undergraduate students can apply for leave via the Student Information System (SIS). Postgraduate students require department approval in order to take leave, therefore are required to complete the hard copy of the form, available from the Arts and Music Student Centre, Old Arts Building.
Leave of Absence is only available after the completion of 50 points towards your course. Local students may take up to two semesters of leave from their degree or course. However, no leave will be permitted until you have successfully completed at least one 12.5 point subject. Undergraduate students can apply via the Student Information System, or fill out a form at the Faculty Student Support Centre. Postgraduate students require department support, therefore need to complete the hard copy form and have it signed.
Leave of absence can only be granted for international students in exceptional circumstances and can only be granted for 6 months (one semester). You must complete an application form in order for the Faculty to assess your request for leave of absence. Before you apply for leave, you should discuss your situation with an international student adviser, as taking leave may affect your student visa.
Coursework students should apply for leave prior to the end of week 2 of the relevant semester if they wish to have their subjects deleted, and prior to the relevant census dates for the subjects, if they wish to have their fees refunded/cancelled.
Masters by Research students wishing to take leave from their studies should contact the Research and Postgraduate Studies office on 8344 9080 for advice on getting their leave approved.
- The maximum allowance for Leave of Absence is two semesters (one semester for Certificate courses). Requests for extra leave must be submitted in writing, with supporting documentation, to the Associate Dean, Academic Programs.
- Leave of Absence will not be approved for students intending to undertake tertiary studies elsewhere.
- Students who fail to re-enrol prior to the end date of their leave will have their enrolment automatically terminated. A reinstatement fee will be levied. If you do not intend to return to study you must submit a discontinuation form. This improves your chances of re-selection if your circumstances change and you wish to apply for re-admission to the course at a later date.

You may be eligible for a refund of up-front or partial Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) payments or Fees.
