Overloading and Overenrolment
Overload refers to a situation wherein the student enrols in a total of more than 56.25 points in a semester, including points from other courses. Applications for overload will only be considered for the following semester. Students who attempt to overload often experience study difficulties. Overloading is not recommended by the Arts & Music Student Centre and is restricted to students who consistently obtain good results.
An enrolment of up to 62.5 points per semester (one semester subject above the normal semester workload) may be approved for students with a good average (at least 70% in the previous semester) if the student has not failed a subject in the previous two semesters. Consideration will be given to students who are only one subject short of completing their degree who can demonstrate special circumstances. Study Abroad and exchange students will not be permitted to overload.
Overenrolment refers to a situation wherein the student undertakes more than the minimum points required for the degree (ie. 300 points in the Bachelor of Arts), or additional subjects at each year level.
Approvals
Commonwealth Supported students (fee type AS): The Higher Education Support Act 2003 (HESA) stipulates that "a higher education provider must not advise a person that he or she is a Commonwealth supported student in relation to a unit of study unless the unit contributes to the requirements of a course of study in which the person is enrolled with that provider or another higher education provider."
To comply with this legislation the University must not permit a domestic student to undertake an over-enrolment, unless the subjects are required for the completion of the person's course. Domestic students who wish to undertake additional points or subjects not required for the completion of their course may be permitted to enrol through the University's Community Access Program (CAP).
Australian fee students (fee type AF) and international fee students (fee type OF): Students with a good standard overall (70% and above), and who also have good academic reasons (e.g. to qualify for Honours or to complete a major) may be permitted to complete an extra 12.5 points towards their degree. Students enrolling in a first-year language will normally be permitted to complete an additional 12.5 point subject. High achieving students (students with a very high Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) score, or students who maintain an H2A average across their Arts study) with good academic reasons, may be permitted to undertake an additional 25 points at second/third-year level. International students may only over-enrol providing that this does not require an extension of the expected course duration or the issue of an amended Confirmation of Enrolment (COE).
The application form for overloading and overenrolment (55kb pdf) should be returned to the Arts and Music Student Centre.
