Languages Options Paper

The purpose of this paper is to review methodologies and current commitments in the teaching of languages to a diverse range of students and to develop a range of options to drive the next stage of decision making.
The options outlined in this paper are by no means final. We will need to work collaboratively over the next couple of months to focus on the most crucial aspects of the issues highlighted in the paper. A series of workshops will be convened to work through the analysis of trends and flows outlined in this paper to determine our preferred approach and to set priorities. It is anticipated that the workshops will take place in last week of the semester break and the first two weeks of semester. We are anxious that everyone have time to read the report and think carefully about the best way to advance the teaching of languages at Melbourne.
Once these key issues have been fully discussed the review committee will move to the second phase of this process, which is to commission a recommendations report, including consideration of the best organisational structures to underpin our preferred strategy.
This Options Paper represents an important step for Arts and languages at the University of Melbourne. We now have a clear, detailed and factual account of our commitments, together with important questions about how best to balance our competing demands. While we have some difficult choices to make we also have great strengths to build upon and I look forward to talking through these issues with you over the coming weeks.
