The Faculty of Arts Renewal Strategy
2008
Voluntary Cessation Programme
After consultation with staff and their representatives regarding the voluntary redundancy process proposed, I write to advise that applications for voluntary redundancies are now open to continuing academic and professional staff members of the Faculty. A final version of the criteria can be located at http://www.arts.unimelb.edu.au/arts-renewal/Arts-Renewal-2008-VCP.doc.
The Faculty of Arts will offer voluntary redundancy packages to continuing academic and professional staff in 2008 subject to the following criteria:
- Staff members electing to accept voluntary redundancy will cease employment on a mutually agreed date on or before 31 December 2008;
- The staff member’s acceptance is subject to approval by the Head of School and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts. Prior to approving any application, the Head of School will give consideration to any workload implications arising from the proposed redundancy and will report to the Dean on any such workload implications.
Academic Staff: Applications will be considered subject to meeting at least one of the following criteria:
- The staff member is primarily engaged in teaching small undergraduate subjects (eg Below 40 students); and/or
- The staff member has not met the minimum requirement of one DEST point per year for the past five years(2003-2007).
Professional Staff: Applications will be considered subject to meeting at least one of the following criteria:
- The staff member’s position is no longer required and will not be replaced; or
- Due to either a work reorganisation or a change in work methods, the position is to be replaced at a lower HEW level or lesser time fraction which will generate a cost saving in excess of 50% per annum.
The application form is available at http://www.arts.unimelb.edu.au/arts-renewal/Arts-Renewal-2008-VCP-Application.doc. Staff are required discuss their application with their Head of School (academic staff) or School Manager/Faculty Unit Manager (professional staff) in the first instance to determine whether the application criteria may be applicable to their position.
Staff are required to submit their application to their Head of School or Faculty General Manager (for Secretariat staff) for initial approval by no later than 31 May 2008. Applicants will be advised as to whether their application has been approved by the Dean by 30 June 2008. Formal approval of the redundancies by the Vice-Chancellor for academic staff and by the Senior Vice-Principal for professional staff will be sought in July 2008 and staff will receive formal written advice following this approval.
