Single Subject Study: Community Access Program
The University of Melbourne's Best Kept Secret
CAP Study Skills: Semester 2, 2008
This subject is valuable to all students who wish to improve their academic skills and is designed in particular for BA applicants who are not proceeding directly from VCE. Enrolment is via the Faculty of Arts Community Access Program (CAP). Enrolments in the subject can be taken until the end of the second week of semester.
The Community Access Program (CAP) enables members of the public to undertake academic subjects outside a normal degree structure, offering access to tertiary study at the University of Melbourne for a diverse cross-section of the community. Each faculty across the University runs a Community Access Program, making a range of their respective subjects available to non-award course students on a fee per subject basis. For further information please contact the Faculty Student Support Centre.
You may choose to study as an assessed or non-assessed student. Assessed CAP students undertake the same subject workload and assessment as award course students and receive a formal academic record of their study. Non-assessed CAP students attend lectures and follow subject reading programs.
Please note that CAP students attend the same classes as other enrolled students and subjects are not usually taught outside normal business hours. Please check subject timetable information prior to enrolment to ensure that you are able to attend all lectures and tutorials.
If you are considering future degree study in the Faculty of Arts, CAP also provides a useful way to 'test the water' in one or more subject areas. While there is no guarantee of selection into degree or diploma courses via CAP, it is possible to use assessed CAP subjects as the basis of selection, either to demonstrate academic merit if previous results were not sufficient for selection or as a recognised equivalent to VCE.

Arts CAP fees
Fees for individual assessed subjects are determined by the discipline of the subject, as well as the number of credit points the subject is allocated. Also, different fees are applicable for Undergraduate and Postgraduate level Arts subjects.
For fee information see the University's Subject Fee Calculator for Australian Fee Places.
Part-fee Remission Bursaries for Arts CAP Study
Please note that the Arts Faculty bursary will no longer be available from 2008.
Part-fee remission bursaries may be available to CAP students in the Arts Faculty applying for assessed Undergraduate level subjects. Bursaries reduce the fees payable by the student, only apply for assessed CAP study, and are not available to international applicants, employer-sponsored applicants, or current award course students. Bursary assistance is available to all eligible applicants in the Arts Faculty for up to 50 credit points of CAP study. After 50 points have been completed students will be required to pay full CAP fees.
A Bursary Application Form [26kb PDF], can be downloaded here.
CAP Assessment and Credit
If you enrol in CAP as an 'assessed' student, you complete the same academic workload (essays, assignments, exams) as students who are taking the subject as part of a degree or diploma course, and you are entitled to request an academic transcript. CAP also provides a 'non-assessed' study option if you do not wish to take on the demands of academic assessment. Non-assessed students attend lectures and follow a course-specific reading program.
If you undertake subjects for assessment through CAP and subsequently gain admission to an award course at the University, you may be eligible to apply for credit for the subjects you have successfully completed. If you are undertaking individual subjects with a view to enhancing your chances of being accepted into an award course, please read information regarding CAP and degree entry and contact the Faculty Student Support Centre if any aspect requires clarification. The Faculty of Arts Credit Policy for CAP and Undergraduate courses or for CAP and Postgraduate courses should also be consulted now if you plan to apply for credit for CAP subjects further down the track.
Professional Applications
If you intend undertaking subjects in the Faculty of Arts for professional development purposes and your employer has agreed to sponsor your enrolment, please refer to Employer sponsored single subject enrolments [147Kb PDF] in the Faculty of Arts.
The Media and Communications Program is now offering media practitioners an opportunity to undertake single postgraduate subjects through CAP. Subject descriptions can be viewed on the Media and Communications Program website.

Study Skills Subject for CAP Students - 100-001
A study skills subject was made available through Arts CAP in 2000 to cater to a growing constituency of students undertaking Arts CAP subjects with a view to future undergraduate selection. Designed as a preparatory program for intending BA applicants who are 'mature age' or not proceeding directly from VCE, 100-001 Study Skills (CAP) aims to teach students a number of skills which are important for success at University and to provide a supportive learning environment.
For those CAP students who feel a course like this might be of benefit to them, usually as part of their efforts to qualify for future BA entry, 100-001 Study Skills (CAP) can be undertaken as one of the four Arts subjects that the faculty normally recommends for selection purposes. 100-001 Study Skills (CAP) is not available for credit towards the BA as unlike other subjects undertaken through CAP, the subject is not part of the BA syllabus.
To get the most out of the subject, students undertaking 100-001 Study Skills (CAP) are strongly advised to concurrently enrol in at least one other first year Arts subject. For further information, please read the Study Skills brochure [PDF 113Kb] or contact the Faculty Student Support Centre to receive a copy of the brochure by post. Because places in the subject are limited, early application is recommended.
