CAP Subject Information

The following table shows areas of study in Arts offering subjects available to CAP students, with links to the Handbook for subject details.

Undergraduate subjects

The University of Melbourne Handbook is available on the web and should be consulted for descriptions of the subjects available within each of the areas of study available to CAP students in the Arts Faculty. Printed copies of the handbook will also be available for browsing in the Arts CAP Office and Arts Faculty Office or for purchase from the University Bookroom from December.

CAP applications for subjects in Psychology are not handled by the Arts CAP Office. Applicants need to consult the School of Behavioural Science (Psychology) for further information on eligibility, fees and how to apply for Psychology subjects through CAP.

If you are applying for first year level assessed CAP study or for first, second or third year level subjects as a non-assessed CAP student your application will normally be approved as a matter of course. In most cases entry to later year level assessed study relies on previous tertiary study in the area. Language students above beginners level should consult the relevant language department about subject placement if they do not hold normal prerequisites and should note that it is not normally possible to commence a language in Semester 2.

Postgraduate and Honours Subjects

CAP applications for postgraduate and fourth year level subjects in the Faculty of Arts are assessed on a case by case basis by academics in the relevant teaching department. As a guide, standard academic prerequisites for the level of study are normally required for both assessed and non-assessed applications. Applicants should also note that places may not be available in particular subjects if award course enrolments are high. Bursary assistance is not normally available for postgraduate level study through the Community Access Program, with the exception this year of Master of Social Work subjects. Bursary assistance is available for Honours level subjects.

The Media and Communications Program is now offering media practitioners an opportunity to undertake single postgraduate subjects through CAP. Subject descriptions can be viewed on the Media and Communications Program website.

Information about postgraduate subjects in the Arts Faculty is best accessed via Department websites or the Faculty of Arts Postgraduate Courses information.

Timetable information

Lecture timetables for most subjects are available on the web through the Student Information System. While the scheduled times are unlikely to change, it is advisable to double-check the lecture locations a week or so before semester starts. If you do not have access to the web, feel free to contact CAP Officer for timetable information. Assessed CAP students should contact the relevant teaching department for information on how to sign up for tutorials. Tutorial times are normally listed on department noticeboards the week before the commencement of semester and/or online timetable. You will not be able to sign up for tutorials until your CAP fees for the relevant subject/s have been paid in full and your ernolment confirmed by Student Administration. Please note that it is possible to change your subject/s during the first two weeks of semester.
