Scholarships for Research Students
Faculty of Arts funding and the generosity of private benefactors provide annual scholarships, bursaries, prizes and awards, including research and travel grants for higher degree students. A range of general scholarships available to most postgraduate students are detailed below, however many scholarships are specific to particular areas of study.
Note: Payment of a scholarship, studentship, bursary or an educational allowance is exempt from income tax when you are enrolled full-time and the scholarship is principally for educational purposes.
If you are eligible to hold a part-time scholarship, you must submit a tax declaration form (part-time scholarships are not tax-exempt).
Faculty-funded Melbourne Research Scholarships (MRS/MIRS) and Melbourne International Fee Remission Scholarships (MIFRS)
Each year, the Faculty of Arts is allocated a limited number of Melbourne Research Scholarships (MRS/MIRS) and Melbourne International Fee Remission Scholarships (MIFRS). The Faculty's Scholarship Committee, chaired by the Associate Dean (Research), meets in December of each year and considers department nominations for the award of these scholarships.

The scholarship is open to graduates of the University of Melbourne who are pursuing graduate studies in the University and will be awarded for the purpose of assisting the recipient to travel overseas to pursue studies related to his or her major interest. Approximate value: $9,000.
The scholarship is offered each year to graduates of the University of Melbourne currently enrolled in, or intending to undertake, higher degree research. The scholarship provides an opportunity, by travel or otherwise, for "postgraduate studies in some branch of Literature, classical or otherwise" which is of a creative nature. (Study in the pursuit of a higher degree is not normally regarded as creative work in terms of the bequest). Approximate value: $10,000.
The scholarship is awarded biennially and provides for study overseas. Application is open to University of Melbourne BA (Honours) graduates who are undertaking a postgraduate degree at the University. Approximate value: $3,000.
Postgraduate Editing Internship To be confirmed - 2007
The Faculty of Arts Postgraduate Editing Internship offers PhD and Masters by Research research candidates the opportunity to work as part of an inter-university postgraduate editorial team on a special issue of the Journal of Australian Studies entitled New Talents 21C. The Internship enables students to develop skills in editorial work and the processes of publication production, and to develop collaborative relationships with other postgraduate research candidates across Australia.
