Hit the Ground Running: Academic Skills for Arts Students
A range of programs and resources are available to help you with your academic and social transition.
These include:
- A series of ‘Foundational Skills’ lectures covering topics such as essay writing, study and library skills;
- Targeted ‘Foundational Skills’ workshops;
- An online student community with discussion forums and blogs, specially designed to help build a cohesive first-year student community;
- Online resources including a Citation Style Guide, an Online Etiquette policy, an Academic Conduct Quiz, and a wiki glossary of terms to be developed collaboratively by students on the LMS;
- An orientation vodcast (video podcast) which highlights key buildings and services on campus;
- The many clubs and societies affiliated with the Student Union, including the Melbourne Arts Student Society;
- The 'Getting your Head Around the BA' booklet (available online) which answers frequently asked questions about the Bachelor of Arts degree and university study.
Foundation lecture and workshop program
In addition to the weekly lecture and tutorial program, you will be expected to attend the Foundation lecture and workshop program. This program will help to equip you with the Interdisciplinary Foundation Skills discussed earlier in this booklet, and more specific skills such as essay writing, research and study skills. It will also familiarise you with the LMS learning community and its various functionalities, and the workshop program will provide opportunities for you to workshop assessment tasks.
