Bernadette Chandrasegaram

APAC Service Delivery Manager, Hewitt Associates

BA (Honours) in Political Science 1997
Master in Asian Studies 2001

The skills I developed in my Arts degree help me every day. My job is not one where I have a set of tasks to do every day; I very much must manage my own time and make things happen. I believe the time-management and self-management skills I learnt when I was doing Arts, especially in my Honours and Masters studies, definitely assisted me with this. The company I work for, Hewitt Associates, is a management consulting and business process services firm. My role acts as the conduit between one of our global clients and the operations team. My knowledge of the history, popular culture, literature and geography of the countries which my colleagues work in is also an asset. People really love that I have read the books, or heard of the film directors that are native to their country and I think it helps to build rapport easily – which is important when the majority of contact is via email and teleconference. It was during my time as an Arts student at Melbourne University that I discovered a great interest in North East Asian politics, and in my Honours year I went on exchange to Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea. The experience at Yonsei was amazing – I would strongly encourage anyone to do an exchange if they can.

Rajiv Jayarajah

Product Manager, (Personal Loans Australia), ANZ Banking Group

Bachelor of Arts 2001
Masters of Applied Commerce 2003

The major benefit of studying Arts is that it trains your mind to analyse complex problems, determine what information is relevant and to use this information to develop a solution. This benefited my career development immensely. My experience to date has shown that nothing can be taken for granted and you have to develop multiple strategies if you are to succeed in business. The Bachelor of Arts is a great foundation for a rewarding career.
