Tenile Emmett

Consultant, Hays IT Personnel

BA DipMus 2001

I started at Hays IT fresh from Uni. What got me the job was the fact that I had done ‘extra’ activities including an exchange to Boston, learning Spanish in Costa Rica and competing in the Students in Free Enterprise World Cup in London, which grew out of the internship subject Managing Work and Projects.

I spend a lot of time doing business development and marketing so more clients will use me to fill their job vacancies and it can be quite a juggling act, but it can be very rewarding.

Arts also allows me to bring a different perspective and develop my communication and interpersonal skills. My writing skills are very good and have certainly helped when writing proposals. All these things put me ahead of many of the other applicants for my position when I applied and got the job.

What are Employers looking for?

Definitely confidence and a drive to succeed. But above all, they are looking for well-rounded people. Hays IT looks for graduates who go beyond hanging their hats on their degrees and their results – whether that be other interests that lay outside the realm of university or even doing an internship.
