Introduction
Indonesian studies is one of six programs that constitute the Asia Institute. The Institute was established in 1998 to strengthen the University's role as a major international centre for the study of Asian languages and societies. It provides a range of versatile course options for postgraduate study in Indonesian.
The emphasis of the postgraduate program is directed to Indonesian language and linguistic studies and an understanding of Indonesia in terms of its colonial history and contemporary political economy. In addition to focussing on one of the areas of expertise provided by staff, postgraduate students are expected to undertake Indonesian language study to a level of substantial written and verbal skills. overseas study in Indonesia is encouraged and offers students the means to develop their language skills and enhance their research ability.
The coursework masters is intended to serve the professional development needs of students using Indonesian language in professional settings, such as translators, interpreters, and primary or secondary school teachers. Areas of specialisation available for higher degree research address issues such as the political economy of Indonesian development and democratic and feminist movements. This provides the foundation for exploring contemporary Indonesian social organisation and strategies for business, trade and international relations in evolving global communities.
