Choosing Subjects in Arts

The Faculty of Arts offers over 500 subjects in more than 40 areas of study. You'll have no problem finding subjects that will suit your specific needs and interests and that will challenge you academically.

In addition to completing one or two subjects towards your major at your home institution, you are strongly encouraged to undertake at least one Australian Studies subject. Australian Studies subjects provide you with opportunities to engage directly with the Australian environment and community, to learn more about Australia and Australians, and to gain new perspectives on your own and other cultures. In short, it will help you make sense of your experience here. Students may also wish to try out a subject from an area of study they have always been interested in, but that is not offered at their home institution.

Subjects in Arts are divided into first year (introductory level), second and third year.

There are generally no pre-requisites for first year Arts subjects. While a majority of second/third year subjects also have no pre-requisites, it is advisable to have taken some previous study in the relevant field for a number of disciplines. Only a small number of subjects have a quota, which means intake is limited, and usually require an additional application. All academic requirements are clearly indicated in the current Course and Subject Handbook as part of individual subject descriptions, and further information can be provided by the student advisors in the Arts & Music Student Centre.
