Postgraduate Diploma
The Postgraduate Diploma allows you to undertake a combination of coursework and research study in a specialist field of study. This course is equivalent to an Arts Honours program if the thesis component is taken and serves as prerequisite entry to a Masters by Research or PhD for those who have not completed a four-year Arts (Honours) degree in the relevant area.

Prospective 2009 students should refer to the 2008 course details above as a guide pending the release of the 2009 Course and Subject Catalogue (CSC) on Monday 20 October 2008. Most 2008 course and subject outlines will carry over to 2009, however please note that the availability and timetabling of subjects does vary each year.
Administrative course changes for 2009 mean that a new course code now applies for most specialisations in the 2009 Postgraduate Diploma in Arts - D23AA. Refer to the draft list of specialisations and codes available for commencement in the 2009 the Postgraduate Diploma in Arts.
Duration
Full time (1 year), part-time (up to 2 years).
Entry
First semester (March) and second semester (July).
Minimum entry requirements
Completion of a recognised Bachelors degree with a major (or equivalent) in the relevant area of study and a grade average equivalent to an H2B (70%) at the University of Melbourne in the major. Some areas will require an H2A (75%) average across the major. Additional requirements may apply.
Course structure
Normally five coursework subjects (5 x 12.5 points), including any recommend compulsory subjects, and a thesis of 12,000 words (37.5 points). Some programs are structured around a 10,000 word (25 point) thesis and 75 points of coursework, or a 15,000 word (50 point) thesis and 50 points of coursework. Subjects offered are at 4th year or higher level. Total of 100 points.
Further study
A Postgraduate Diploma with a grade average of at least H2A (75%) may qualify students, who do not have a four-year Arts (Honours) degree with a research component in the relevant area, for entry to a research higher degree.
