PhD (Doctor of Philosophy)

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree enables you to undertake a substantial piece of independent and sustained research on an original topic under academic supervision. The research is expected to make a significantly new and innovative contribution to the discipline. The PhD thesis is deeper and more comprehensive than a Masters by Research thesis.

A four year Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree with a research component or equivalent from an approved institution with a final result of at least H2A (75%) which normally includes considerable work in the relevant area of study.

A thesis, normally 80,000 words, but the length varies with each area of study. The thesis should not exceed 100,000 words (or equivalent) without special approval from the PhD Committee. There may be other components of the study and/or assessment, for example a coursework component is available in some areas of study.

Supervision

You should arrange an interview with the relevant course coordinator prior to submitting your application in order to discuss your suitability for candidature and your proposed course of study. To assist you in researching potential supervisors, the University’s Find an Expert website lists the contact details and research areas and enables you to search by topic, name, faculty, school or centre.

Your application must be recommended by the relevant School. This indicates that the department concerned is satisfied with your academic background, that your research topic is deemed suitable, and that adequate supervision for your topic is available.
