Overview
Arts Honours is a specialised year of study for students who have achieved academic excellence in their undergraduate degree. An Honours year enables you to extend your knowledge of your area of specialisation through higher level coursework subjects and an independent research thesis under the guidance of an academic supervisor.
Course Structure
The Arts Honours degree consists of 100 points of study (equivalent of 1 year full-time study) in subjects at Fourth Year level, with each subject generally worth 12.5 points.
Pure Honours usually consists of a thesis of 37.5 points and 62.5 points of coursework.
Combined Honours usually consists of a thesis of 37.5 points, 25 points of coursework in the department in which the thesis is undertaken, and 37.5 points of coursework in the combined area of study.

Prerequisite Entry Standards
Bachelor of Arts Degree Students
Entry in the Arts Honours program is based on the following criteria:
- completed the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree and
- completed a Major in the discipline/s in which Honours is being undertaken (including any specified prerequisites). A minimum grade average must be obtained for the Major/s, as specified by individual departments - usually either 70% (H2B) or 75% (H2A). Check the exact requirements for the relevant area of study in the Undergraduate Handbook.
Further Study
After completing the Arts Honours program, high achieving students with a research component in the relevant area may be eligible to apply for entry into the Arts Masters by Research. With the support of the thesis supervisor, masters candidates may also apply to convert to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
Honours graduates may meet the entry requirements for Masters by Coursework programs delivered by the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences. An Honours degree can also reduce the length of study required by up to a year for some Masters degrees.
