Single Subject Study (Community Access Program)
You can study a single subject under the guidance of world-class academics at one of Australia's oldest faculties, even if you have not completed previous studies, as part of The University of Melbourne's Community Access Program (CAP). It can be the start of studies towards professional development; part of your pursuit for personal enrichment; or a pathway to undergraduate or graduate study.
Learn What You Really Want To Know
Select from hundreds of subjects at the Faculty of Arts. Search our online Course and Subject Handbook to find a subject that suits you.
Popular subjects include:
- Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia
- Creative Writing: Ideas and Practice
- International Politics
- Modern Art: The Politics of the New
Pathways
The Community Access Program may be used to gain entry into The University of Melbourne's Bachelor of Arts. The completed subjects can be used to demonstrate academic ability or as a recognised equivalent to Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). It is also possible to have the completed Community Access Program subjects credited towards the degree after admission, provided you studied Community Access Program as an assessed student.
Community Access Program Assessment and Credit
If you enrol in Community Access Program as an 'assessed' student, you complete the same academic workload (essays, assignments, exams etc ...) as students who are taking the subject as part of a Bachelor degree. Upon completion of the subject, you will be entitled to an academic transcript.
'Non-assessed' students attend lectures and follow a course-specific reading program, but do not complete assessment or receive an official transcript.
If you undertake subjects for assessment through Community Access Program and subsequently gain admission to a degree at the University, you may be eligible to apply for credit for the subjects you have successfully completed. If you are undertaking individual subjects with a view to enhancing your chances of being accepted into an award course, please read information regarding Community Access Program and Bachelor of Arts degree entry and contact the Arts and Music Student Centre if any aspect requires clarification.
Please also see the Faculty of Arts Credit Policy for Community Access Program and Undergraduate courses or for Community Access Program and Postgraduate courses if you plan to apply for credit for Community Access Program subjects further down the track.
