Faculty of Arts

Languages

With a vast selection of languages taught on campus, Study Abroad and Exchange students are welcome to either continue previous language study or to enrol in a beginner's stream. All students with previous language experience are required to sit a placement test upon their arrival to assess their level of proficiency before enrolling in intermediate or advanced language classes.

Most language subjects at beginners or intermediate level require concurrent enrolment in another subject with related content (a co-requisite subject). It is not possible to take the language subject without enrolment in its co-requisite.

Below is a list of the languages available to study abroad and exchange students, with links to their entry in the Undergraduate Studies Handbook.

Please note: Only Intermediate level Spanish subjects are offered by The University of Melbourne. All other levels of Spanish language classes (Beginners and Advanced) are offered by Latrobe University. Study Abroad students can ONLY take the Spanish subjects at Intermediate level, taught by The University of Melbourne - provided they are eligible. Enrolment in Beginners or Advanced level Spanish taught by Latrobe University will incur extra cost.
