Guidelines

Details

The scholarship is designed to support a research project dealing with art history, archaeology, architectural history, urbanism, or history of designed landscapes of Rome or its region from antiquity to the twentieth century. It is expected that the project will be one for which a period of research in libraries, archives, museums, collections, or sites in Rome or Lazio is necessary.

The scholarship pays for a research grant and travel and board and lodging expenses. The Italian Institute of Culture Melbourne will provide the successful applicant with an intensive course in Italian language prior to departure, according to the level required.

The scholarship will be awarded for a three-month period in the British School in Rome's (BSR) Italian academic year (October-July).

Information for 2009-10 Applicants

The scholarship includes a travel grant approximately equal to a return economy airfare from Melbourne to Rome (up to AUD$3,000), full board and lodging (breakfast, lunch and dinner, except for dinner on Saturdays and lunch on Sundays), and a research grant of approximately AUD$3000. The Italian Institute of Culture Melbourne will provide the successful applicant with an intensive course (10 weeks, 20 hours) of Italian language prior to departure, according to the level required (beginners, intermediate or advanced).

Eligibility
  • a junior scholar, who will normally be a PhD or MA by research candidate at University of Melbourne, and
  • a graduate who is being considered for postdoctoral research within five years of being awarded their PhD at University of Melbourne, or Honorary Research Fellows of University of Melbourne
  • local or international students at the University of Melbourne.
Applications

Please note there is no application form.

Applications must include:

  • Scholarships/Prizes Application Cover Sheet
  • a two-page outline of the project, that includes a statement of its relationship to any course of study being undertaken, or has been undertaken, or to the applicant’s previous research
  • a separate bibliography of no more than one page.
  • two references from those familiar with the applicant’s academic background and research, including comments on the feasibility of the proposed project.
  • a Curriculum Vitae (2 pages)
  • details about whether they are a full- or part-time student
  • academic transcript to date
  • a list of any relevant publications by the applicant

Any works submitted will not be returned unless specifically requested.

 
Special requirements
  • The scholarship holder is required to be resident at the British Rome School (BSR) throughout the period of the award.
  • A designated partner may be accommodated by prior agreement with the BSR but must pay for his or her board and lodging at the BSR's prevailing rates.
  • Children cannot be accommodated.
  • Applicants with special needs are requested to contact the British School at Rome before submitting their application to discuss their requirements.

Applicants should demonstrate the following in their application
  • The feasibility of completion of the proposed project within 3 months. This should be a discrete piece of work, but may be part of a longer research project such as a thesis.
  • The extent to which the project is centered on Rome, will make good use of the research opportunities that Rome provides, and the extent to which a period at the British School in Rome is essential to this research.
  • That the scholarship will produce a significant research outcome (completion of a higher degree, refereed or other research publications, etc.) within two years of the scholarship.
  • That the applicant can contribute to the academic community of the British School in Rome.

 

Note: Part-time students should note that the University is required to withhold tax from scholarship payments.

Successful Applicant

On receiving notification of the award, the successful applicant will negotiate with the British School at Rome concerning which 3-month period in the next BSR academic year (October to June) in which the scholarship will be taken.

On receiving notification of the award, the successful applicant will negotiate with the Italian Institute of Culture, Melbourne concerning the course of language study to be taken.

The scholarship holder is required to be resident at the BSR throughout the period of the award. Permission to be absent for more than two days needs to be obtained from the Director.

The scholarship holder will be required to complete a Risk Assessment form with their department/school or supervisor, and, if they are students, apply for Leave to Study Away (if a PhD student, with the School of Graduate Studies, if an MA student, with the Faculty of Arts).

Within two months of the completion of the scholarship the applicant is required to submit a report of 300-500 words on their time in Rome. This report is to be submitted to:

This report will be made available to the Faculty of Arts, the BSR, the Italian Institute of Culture, Melbourne, and to the sponsor of the scholarship, and may be used by these organisations for publicity purposes. The successful applicant will undertake to acknowledge the support of the scholarship in any thesis or publication to which the scholarship has contributed. The granting of the award is governed by the Equal Opportunity policy of the University of Melbourne. The British School at Rome has an Equal Opportunity Policy in place that reads:

The scholarship provides accommodation for the scholarship holder only in a single room. Any requests for accommodation for partners, spouses etc. is a matter for the scholarship holder to discuss with the British School at Rome.
