Environment Health and Safety (EHS) Committee
Terms of reference
The Committee is an advisory committee of the Dean of Arts reporting to the Faculty through Standing Committee of Heads and referring issues to the Faculty and Department Managers Group.
The Committee advises the Dean of Arts on all aspects of environment, health and safety in the Faculty. It also acts on behalf of the Dean to implement policies and procedures in the context of the University's statutory responsibilities.
The objective of the Committee is to improve the environment health and safety of staff and students in the Faculty of Arts.
The Committee is responsible for making recommendations on policy and for advising and, where appropriate, initiating action within the Faculty of Arts with respect to:
- all environment health and safety matters
- setting operational objectives and targets in line with the University's strategic objectives and targets
- developing and implementing measures designed to ensure a safe and healthy work and study environment for staff and students
- reducing the number and severity of workplace injuries
- the formation and function of departmental environment health and safety committees
- the election of health and safety representatives in Designated Work Groups in the Faculty as well as environmental representatives in each department.
- maintaining the Faculty's accreditation to SafetyMAP and certification to the environmental management system ISO 14001
To achieve these aims, the Committee will:
- receive reports from and liaise with the University Occupational Health and Safety Committee and the Environment Advisory Committee, departmental environment health and safety committees and University officers with specific health and safety and environmental responsibilities.
- review progress to reaching operational objectives and targets on a quarterly basis.
- review injury reports, incident reports and Environment/Safety audit reports from departments within the Faculty and from University and external auditors
- promote improvements in Environment Health and Safety procedures by providing information on best practices identified within the Faculty and the University community.
- assist in the planning and evaluation of changes in the work environment or work practices, which may have implications for the safety of staff and students within the Faculty or the environment.
- facilitate co-operation between management employees and students
- provide a forum for participation by employees and post-graduate students of the Faculty, in developing and implementing measures designed to ensure the health and safety of the Faculty community and to protect the environment.
Membership
An interim committee, covering all major buildings occupied by Arts and with staff drawn from different levels, has been formed and will operate until such time as the University introduces the new consultative arrangements, expected to be mid-year 2006.
