Best Practice in Supervision Award
Award
This award recognises, rewards and encourages sustained excellence in postgraduate research supervision. The Faculty of Arts will confer up to one award annually of $3,000 which will be paid into the research account of the successful recipient of the award.
Eligibility
Full-time and Part-time members of academic staff, tenured or contract, with at least five years of current and continuous experience in the University at supervising PhD, Professional Doctorate, or research masters students, at the time of nomination.
Nominations
Each nomination must be endorsed by the Head of Department and supported by the following:
- Three former (completed) research higher degree students supervised by the nominee
- One University of Melbourne Faculty staff member who has had no less than 5 years experience of postgraduate supervision
Applications
A nomination form for Best Practice in Supervision Award [40K Word file] is available requiring the signatures of each nominator, the nominee and Head of Department. Each nominator and nominee must attach a reference of no more than one A4 page that addresses the selection criteria (as appropriate to their position).
Selection Criteria
1. Supervisor as model researcher - to be addressed by a colleague of the nominee, who is also a nominator.
A demonstrated understanding of the areas supervised.
Could be demonstrated by:
- supervisor's record of scholarship and publication
- joint publication with research students
- requests to be an external examiner as evidence of collegiality and promoting postgraduate researc
2. Supervisor as a mentor - to be addressed by each former (completed) research students of the nominee, who is also one of the nominators.
A demonstrated commitment to the student's welfare.
Could be demonstrated by:
- support and encouragement given to the student
- assisting the student to establish and use networks with other students and academics in the field of study
- availability to the student
- provision of a sympathetic atmosphere
- provision of conference and publication support for the student
- knowledge of the University's administrative processes relating to supervision (e.g. codes of practice, progress review, submission and examination, scholarships)
- advice to the student on job contacts and possibilities.
3. Supervisor as a teacher (to be address by the nominee).
A demonstrated understanding of the research student's learning process.
Could be demonstrated by:
- effective approaches to guidance during the planning of research projects
- structures established for ongoing interaction with students
- timely reading and returning of student work with appropriate comments
- critical analysis of student work maintaining a balance between providing guidance and encouraging a student's independence
- fostering and facilitating the student's development of academic skills and self-direction.
4. Supervisor's track record (to be addressed by the nominee).
A list of outcomes over the last five years ONLY.
- numbers of all students supervised in the five years (indicate whether full, associate or co-supervision)
- student progression and completion rates, times to completion, results of examination (whether revisions or re-submission was required)
- employment and post-doctoral histories of graduated students
- copies of examiners' reports on theses where these reflect on nominees' supervision.

- Friday 16 March Call for nominations
- Friday 13 April Closing date for submission of nominee applications
- Friday 27 April Selection of nominees for award
- Wednesday 16 May Presentation of awards at Faculty Board
The fully-completed and signed paper original of the nomination form for Best Practice in Supervision Award [40K Word file] and supporting letters addressing the Selection Criteria must be received by the Associate Dean (Research & Research Training) by no later than 5pm, Friday, 13 April, 2007.
