Research and Research Training Committee

Terms of Reference

The Research and Research Training Committee (R&RT) has a major responsibility to provide information and advice on policy matters relating to research and research training to Faculty Executive and Faculty Board.

In particular, the R&RT Committee has responsibility for monitoring and developing strategies in relation to Research Training as follows:
•        quality of research training and supervision within the Faculty;
•        research student progress and performance;
•        Faculty and School RHD completion rates;
•        support services to enhance the experience of research students in the Faculty including facilities and resources, transition workshops and Faculty Scholarships and Grants Schemes; and
•        review and consideration of proposals for major and minor course changes to the Masters by Research degrees (thesis only and the advanced seminar and shorter thesis) and the PhD; MA by research examination policy; and general candidature rules and regulations pertaining to Masters by research candidates.

 

The Research Committee is also responsible for monitoring and developing strategy and policy related to academic staff research in the Faculty, as follows:
•        research income including the development and implementation of new strategies and policies to increase and diversify research income;
•        research activity of academic staff across the Faculty including the development and implementation of new strategies to improve supervision of RHD students, and to increase the number and quality of DEST publications and National Competitive Grant applications;
•        develop and set priority/strategic areas of research including the fostering of cross-disciplinary research with the view to attracting research income and RHD recruitment;
•        contributing to, reviewing and monitoring annual Faculty and School Strategic Research Plans and targets.

 

The Committee has responsibility and delegated decision-making powers in regard to SSP (Short and Long), the Early Career and Faculty Small grants Schemes, Publication Subsidy Grants, Visiting Scholars, Staff Conference Support Schemes and Best Practice in Supervision and Research Awards. These programs will be regularly reviewed and alterations to existing guidelines or the establishment of new programs reported to Faculty Executive and Faculty Board.

New interpretations of existing policy and minor policy changes are reported to, and are subject to review by, Faculty Executive and Faculty Board.

Major policy changes should be approved by the R&RT Committee and reported to Faculty Executive, who may recommend adoption by Faculty Board, amend, or refer back for clarification or reconsideration of any such item.

Terms of Reference

To consider and approve applications for the following grants - Publication Subsidy Grants, Overseas Research Scheme, Travel Grants, Project Grants and other grants as applicable.

Visiting Scholars Scheme

Membership

The membership of this Committee is as nominated by the Dean from time to time.  Given the brief of the Committee it is expected that the membership will come from senior academic staff of the Faculty.

Terms of Reference

To consider nominations and recommend allocation of funds under the Faculty’s Visiting Scholar Scheme.

Scholarship Committees

The Faculty exercises administrative responsibility for the award of a number of scholarships and prizes. The appropriate terms of reference and membership of the scholarship committees are set out in the relevant University regulation or Calendar announcement.
