Faculty Small Grant Programme 2008

Faculty Small Grant Scheme (Seeding Grants and Near-Miss Grants)

1. Faculty offers two small grant schemes:

Seeding and Near-Miss Grants: Maximum award $5,000. (Schools are required to match the Faculty allocation on a 60/40 basis: $3,000 Faculty; $2,000 School.*) Faculty funds will be made available to Schools following consideration of applications by Faculty's Small Grant Program Committee.

*Note: The Head of School's signature and School Themis Account Code on the application constitute agreement to provide matching funding.

 

2. Eligibility

If Untenured:

Applicant should hold an appointment until December 2008, and have a reasonable expectation that the appointment will continue until December 2009. A supporting letter from the Head of School must accompany the application for funding.

Teaching Relief:

Faculty’s Small Grants Scheme (Seeding and Near-Miss) does not provide Teaching Relief.

 

3. Reporting Requirements: Do I need to report on my Grant? - Yes

"Near-Miss" and "Seeding" Grant applicants must submit a written report to Faculty's Small Grant Scheme Committee.

Note: Delays in the submission of your Report for approval may result in delays in consideration of any further applications for funding under Faculty's Small Grant Scheme.

 

4. Seeding Grants (up to $5,000) - One Round Only

Due Date

Aim

Primary Purpose - To help individual researchers with new projects leading to (a) an article and (b) an ARC Discovery Project including Linkage Project Grant. Seeding grants will also support collaborative grants aimed at securing ARC funding.

Preference

Normally be given to those whose applications demonstrate intent and ability to apply for a national competitive grant and/or who have not yet obtained a national competitive grant.

Eligibility

Faculty staff holding a salaried appointment (T&R or RO) of at least 0.5 Full Time Equivalent.

Application process

Applications will not be considered where an applicant is awaiting the outcome of an application already submitted to the ARC for consideration. Such applicants should see section below on “Near-Miss” grants.

5. Near-Miss Grants (up to $5,000) – One Round

Faculty's Near-Miss Grants are aimed at applicants for ARC grants who were:

Eligibility

Normally open to Faculty staff holding a salaried appointment (T&R or RO) of at least 0.5 Full Time Equivalent who were ranked by the ARC in the top 10%-20% (Discovery-Project applications) and in the top 10% (linkage Project Applications). Applicants must demonstrate an intention to apply to either the Discovery or Linkage Schemes during the 18 months following award of the Grant.

Applicants invited to apply to the MRGS should forward a copy of their MRGS application to the Staff and Student Support Officer, Arts Research. Staff whose ARC application fell in the top 10% band and who have not received an invitation to apply for the MRGS should contact the MRO.

Applicants in the top 20% (ARC Discovery-Project) should apply to the Faculty Scheme as per these guidelines.

Note: If an applicant is invited subsequently to apply for an MRGS, s/he must notify the Staff and Student Support Officer, Arts Research immediately.

Applicants awarded a Faculty Near-Miss Grant who are subsequently awarded an MRGS must return the Faculty Grant.
