What does the scheme fund?
The Faculty's Visiting & International Scholars Scheme aims to facilitate and encourage links between researchers in the Faculty of Arts and scholars of international distinction. The Faculty Awards are designed to support scholars who, in addition to carrying out research, will be able to contribute to departmental and interdepartmental teaching programs in the Faculty. Schools are encouraged to consult with their postgraduate research students and are encouraged to consider gender balance in their nominations under the scheme.
What is the difference between a Visiting and International Scholar?
The length of the scholar's stay determines the type of scholar they are. The scheme enables researchers of international distinction to undertake research and teaching in the Faculty for a period of at least two weeks for Visiting Scholars and at least two months for International Scholars. A total of three awards are available annually in support of both International and Visiting Scholars with priority for one award given to a scholar from a priority country.
What funding is available?
- Three awards of up to $8,500 are available to support International Scholars. Schools must provide matching funding of at least $1,500 plus in-kind support.
- Three awards of up to $2,000 are available to support an International Visiting Scholars. Schools must provide matching funding of at least $1,000 plus in-kind support.
- Up to $1,000 is available to support an Australian Visiting Scholar. Schools must provide matching funding of at least $500 plus in-kind support.
All Award recipients are expected to deliver a public lecture during their visit.
Does the scholar or the hosting school apply?
The hosting school is considered to be the applicant.
Faculty will notify the host school of the outcome of the application. The host school should then contact the scholar.
The nominating school is responsible for finding suitable living accommodation for the visitor (perhaps at one of the colleges or Halls of Residence), and a room on campus in which to work. Schools whose nominations are successful are also responsible for recommending to the University that the visitor be offered an appropriate University appointment (for example, as a Visiting Fellow). Such recommendations should be forwarded via the Dean's Office to Human Resources and should include curriculum vitae and full details of the duration of the visit. Information on procedures relating to the appointment and payment of visitors is available in the Personnel Policy and Procedures, Section 4.2.
What should my application include?
Each nomination should include:
- the nominee's curriculum vitae and list of publications
- the contribution s/he is expected to make to the teaching and research programs of the nominating School
- the contribution s/he is expected to make to interdisciplinary studies and research within the Faculty at large
- the dates of the proposed visit during the first or the second semester of the academic year
- evidence that the nominee would accept the Award for the proposed period if offered it
- confirmation of the nominating School's financial contribution and in-kind support for their nominated applicant; and
- an estimate of any costs incurred by the visit not covered by the Award together with an indication of how the nominating Schools intends to cover these additional costs.
Is the scholar required to submit a report?
The host school is required to ensure that International Scholars submit a brief post-visit report.
Schools hosting a Visiting Scholar will be required to ensure the Scholar submits a brief post-visit report (the Scholar's report may be substituted by a report from the Head/Director).
Note:Reports must be submitted by International and Visiting Scholars before any new award can be confirmed. Reports will be considered by Faculty's Honorary Degrees, Personal Chairs and Visiting Scholars Committee and made generally available within Faculty.
Are there priority countries?
The scheme is linked to Faculty's internationalisation program. Each year, researchers from a particular country nominated by the Associate Dean (International) will be given priority for one award. In 2009 priority will be given to Germany, USA, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Malaysia and Thailand.
What is the closing date in 2008 for 2009 Visiting Scholars?
